“Zoning & Code Enforcement”

Permits are required when buildings or other structures are erected,
constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed,
converted, demolished, or changed in use or occupancy.  Additionally,
if you are operating an in-home occupation, a permit is required for that
as well.  There are also a number of new exceptions when building
permits are no longer required; however a zoning permit is required.
Residents are encouraged to call or stop by the Township office if they
have any questions about their proposed project.  The function of the
Building Code Official, and the Zoning Officer is to enforce Township
Building Codes and Ordinances along with Zoning Regulations to ensure
public health, safety, and welfare through construction built to a national
standard.

Presently, South Hanover Township is enforcing Act 45, the Uniform
Construction Code (UCC) adopted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
This code adopted the 2006 International Code Council’s code series
including the International Residential Code for one and two family dwellings,
and the International Building Code for all other use groups.

Additionally, please be sure to apply for your permit well in advance for
the project you would like to do.  Permit applications and instructions are
available under the Applications and Forms section of this website.  The Township has up to thirty days to review a permit application.
When you receive your approved permit, certain inspections shall be required.

Please contact the Township at least twenty-four hours in advance to schedule all zoning and codes inspections.
